A display case with drawers reimagined as a map chest. The top is a slanting box lid which can be used as a desk surface or as a support for a removed drawer. Inside is a flat bottomed storage area. There are four drawers. The base drawer works normally, the upper three drawers come out at a sloping-down angle. This is an amazing piece of furniture. The piece took 3 years to create as per the makers label and was originally for use as a bird egg storage and display cabinet – in a museum or private collection. We purchased it as a map chest last year in a bit of a sorry state.
We've treated it for woodworm just to be on the safe side although this is long gone. We painted the chest in 1829 Moonstone and added heavy duty braked castors to the bottom so it can be easily rolled around .The drawers are on a steep angle so we also added brass turn catches at the sides to stop the drawers from sliding out on their own. The drawers were decoupaged inside using old Ordnance Survey and atlas maps. To complete the look we gave the drawers vintage style hot air balloon knobs.
