Victorian Wind-out Dining Table and 6 Antique Chairs

Victorian Wind-out Dining Table and 6 Antique Chairs

This is a good quality Joseph Fitter Victorian mahogany extending wind-out dining table, on turned reeded legs and original castors. It dates from the 1870s and extends to 150cm by use of a worm gear & crank handle mechanism - which bears the Fitter metallic trade plate. With a spare leaf it comfortably seats 6 people and will store perfectly for those bigger occasions. This is a solid, sturdy, quality piece. The winding handle turns true and comes with the table. We make no secret of the fact that we are big fans of these tables and we have some expertise in restoring them. We were delighted to get our hands on one in such good condition.

We could have re-polished the top and offered it as an authentic antique; however, we enjoy giving pieces a new identity and decided to paint the base in Farrow & Ball shade 16 "Cord" . As with most of the Fitter tables, the top is actually poplar wood and was originally stained a mahogany colour. We sanded the faded top and then applied several coats of clear matt sealer before polishing with Carnauba wax . At one time the top has suffered a minor attack from woodworm; though long gone we thoroughly treated it to prevent any further damage. The chairs date from around the same time and after full preparation were also painted in "Cord" before being recovered using an in keeping tapestry fabric called "Wild Flowers" this has been scotchguard protected. All the paintwork has been waxed using Carnauba for added protection.
