A French provincial Petrin or Dough Box in Walnut with splayed legs, dating from the !9th Century. Dough was kneaded and left to rise in this raised wooden lidded trough.
Our lovely customer Valerie has owned this Petrin for some time and it was in a poor state when she acquired it. She wanted to display it in her home, but the finish was too soiled with ingrained dirt and the like to make it attractive. The legs were in need of some TLC too. she asked us if we could improve its looks and make the necessary repairs.
We undertook a sympathetic restoration and repair, scraping and sanding the external surfaces without spoiling the character of the piece. After that, we applied three coats of water based satin varnish.
We left the inside of the Petrin untouched.
Thank you Valerie for letting us work on this fantastic piece.
