Antique Secretaire Bookcase / Georgian Bureau

Antique Secretaire Bookcase / Georgian Bureau

An antique Georgian III oak bureau topped with an antique mahogany two door display cupboard to form a secretaire bookcase. The bureau has 4 wide drawers and a fall enclosing a fitted interior of small drawers and pigeon holes. It stands on shaped bracket feet. The bookcase cupboard has two doors and three adjustable shelves. The doors have old crown glass panes separated by astragal beads.

When we bought the bureau, it was topped with a 2 door cupboard with wooden panels in the doors. We realised that the cupboard, whilst old, did not originally belong with the bureau. After a considerable wait, we eventually found a cupboard better suited to the bureau. We replaced the missing cornice to the top of the cupboard with a new version. In amongst the pigeon holes and drawers of the bureau is a little secret drawer. The fall has its origlnal lock and key, we have fitted a new lock with key to the display cabinet doors.

After thorough preparation and repairs, we professionally spray painted the secretaire. We started with two coats of shellac based primer, then followed with two coats of water based acrylic resin undercoat in grey. We then applied two coats of water based acrylic satin in 'Oberon'. Finally we applied a coat of water based matt varnish.

We fitted the writing surface of the fall with a piece of grey leatherette. We have restored the original drawer pulls on the bureau as they were badly tarnished. To add some individuality the bookcase has been decoupaged inside with old dictionary pages.

The secretaire bookcase separates in two for transportation.
