Antique Mahogany Linen Press

Antique Mahogany Linen Press

An antique mahogany linen press made up from a Victorian chest of drawers and an earlier Georgian cabinet. The base chest has a pair of top drawers above three wide drawers. The bottom drawer is exceptionally deep. The front corners of the chest are rounded. It sits on four turned feet. The Georgian top cabinet has a pair of panelled doors and a moulded top cornice. The door panels are set in beading. The cabinet has three adjustable shelves inside.

The Georgian cabinet arrived at the Fettling Fairies attached to the top of a bureau (See the bureau here) but plainly didn't belong with it - or even fit as it was deeper than the bureau top. We thought it was such a lovely old thing that it deserved to be with something better suited to it - we looked for quite a while before we came across the Victorian chest of drawers. At some stage in its life, possibly even before original manufacture, the cabinet suffered a very minor woodworm attack. As this was probably more than 200 years ago, there's no cause for concern! We fitted new feet to the chest of drawers as it had lost its original ones.

After some repairs, TLC and thorough preparation, we professionally spray painted the pieces. We started with two coats of shellac based primer, followed by two coats of water based acrylic resin undercoat. We then applied two coats of water based acrylic satin in Spell Grey. Finally, the exterior surfaces had a coat of water base matt varnish.

Both sections retain their original hardware, the lock to the cabinet has its key.

The press separates in two for transportation. The base chest section is 117cm tall
