An antique Victorian Joseph Fitter wind-out table with two fixed leaves and a drop-in third leaf. It has four cabriole mahogany legs, a mahogany frame and new brass castors. We have matched it with a set of 6 antique Victorian balloon back chairs with interesting carved detail to the lower back and Regency style front legs.
We love antique wind-out tables at The Fettling Fairies and were delighted when we came across this example with cabriole legs. We gave it a plenty of TLC and a thorough service before commencing refinishing. At some point it had lost its castors, we sourced a new set of brass ones which are in-keeping.
We have matched the table with a quality set of chairs that have been cared for and well used through their life. A long time ago it looks like a skilled blacksmith has made some special brackets to strengthen a few of the chairs - these are quite unobtrusive. Curiously, one of the chairs had been intentionally reduced in height by a couple of inches and heavy duty brackets fitted to reinforce it. Our imaginations have run wild trying to work out the reason! We have made this chair the same height as the others, we think our 'surgery' fits in.
After full preparation, we professionally spray painted the set. We started with two coats of shellac based primer, followed by two coats of water based acrylic resin undercoat. We gave the chairs two coats of water based acrylic satin in "Aurora", we gave the table two coats of water based acrylic satin in Pale Linen (The table top had three coats). We gave the whole set a coat of water based matt varnish (the table top had three coats).
We have reupholstered the chairs using a tapestry fabric called "Red Butterfly"; this has been fabric protected. The table is 106cm long when not extended; a winding handle is of course included.
